The Curse of Plastic

Nature is weeping. It’s time we humans hear the cry for help from earth, its plants, oceans and living creatures. It is time we responded positively! After all, we are dependent on the ocean for the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Which is why it is great to learn through Netzwerk Deutschland Afrika (NAD)  that three groups of companies engaged in tuna fishing have agreed to co-operate by gathering old fishing equipment together for recycling, instead of casting it into the ocean. The Seychelle company “Seychellois company Brikole”, the French “Orthongel” and Spanish “OPAGAC” have realized the danger these pose for the oceans and its inhabitants. The equipment is 10% of the 12m tons of plastic that lands annually in the planet’s oceans. This upsets the eco-system and causes untold suffering for wild birds, marine mammals, tortoises and fish, that get entangled in the rubbish and are doomed to a horrendous slow and painful death. Others mistake plastic for food, so that they starve to death, as plastic clogs up the intake of nourishing food.

We know by now that there is no need for this. Each year plastic kills millions of creatures, destroys the beautiful coral reefs and pollutes the waters. There are substitutes for plastic, such as reusable carrier bags, water bottles that don’t spill and other non-plastic products. If we wish to survive, we can no longer ignore our casual disregard of the environment and animal life!
