In Memory of Ruth Weiss (1924 – 2025)

A gentle spirit with a far-reaching impact

We mourn the passing of Ruth Weiss—renowned author, journalist, and tireless advocate for human rights—who died peacefully in the early morning of September 5, 2025, at the age of 101. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family on this profound loss.

Ruth’s century-long life was dedicated to justice, equality, and dialogue. Born in Germany and forced to flee Nazi persecution as a child, she later became an influential journalist and mediator in Africa, recognized for her courageous reporting and her unwavering commitment to ending apartheid and advancing peace.

A private burial will take place on September 15, 2025 at the Jewish cemetery in Münster, Westphalia. A public memorial gathering is being planned for a later date, where friends, colleagues, and admirers will celebrate her remarkable legacy.

The Ruth Weiss Society has been deeply moved by the many tributes and letters of sympathy arriving from around the world. These messages will be shared with her family, honoring the profound impact she had on countless lives.

“Your life and your tireless commitment to human rights and the peace process in South Africa are an enduring example of courage and compassion, especially remarkable given your own early experiences of persecution.”
— From a condolence letter by artist René Böll

Ruth’s words and example will continue to inspire those who strive for dignity, justice, and peace.

May her memory be a blessing.
