Climate change and Africa

Africa is one of the continents most affected by climate change, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Key development sectors have already suffered widespread losses and damage, such as loss of biodiversity, water scarcity, reduced food production, loss of life and reduced economic growth. IPCC explained that Africans are disproportionately employed in climate-exposed industries: In sub-Saharan Africa, 55-62% farm workers are employed in agriculture and 95% of arable land is rain-irrigated.

PEN presents the OVID Prize 2022 to Ruth Weiss

We would like to point out that the event takes place during the Frankfurt Days of Exile, to which a rich program of talks and exhibitions on persecution, flight and reception is offered, see below. ZIMBABWE NGOS

The Zimbabwe government of President Mnangagwa is determined to push through controversial amendments to the law governing Private Voluntary Organisation. The Bill was first introduced in November 2021 “to counter terrorism and prohibit political lobbying from non-government organisations.”

Nature is weeping. It’s time we humans hear the cry for help from earth, its plants, oceans and living creatures. It is time we responded positively! After all, we are dependent on the ocean for the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

South African Visit

There appears to be movement in the South African scandal of the so-called “State capture” and the infamous Gupta family. According to the on-line “Daily Maverick”, Joel Raphela, the ex-deputy director-general in the Department of Mineral Resources, was placed under arrest, along with two Gupta lieutenants, while a further suspect whose present address was unknown will be charged in absentia.

Beware of Elephants !

Wow! And apologies! In the Blog on Zims problems with elephants I thoughtlessly wrote “Zambia, when I meant ZIMBABWE!
However, elephants are still a Zim (not a Zam) issue. In the last week of May Zimbabwe hosted the African Elephant Conference at Hwange and naturally issues such as culling and the ban on ivory was an issue.
