Who still believes in the integrity, honesty and sense of responsibility of politicians or multinationals or the police- the so-called friends and helpers! Or is certain that they will receive a just punishment for corruption?
This is why it is good to be told by Network-Africa-Germany, that one of the richest men in Malawi has been found guilty of a bribery attempt and given a nine-year gaol sentence! He had tried to persuade a judge to rule in favour of the former President Peter Mutharika in a case alleging election fraud. It was his bad luck that the conversation had been recorded.
Surely this is an exception! Especially if one considers the case of the former Zimbabwe Health Minister Obadiah Moyo and the so-called “Drax case”. This was dismissed on the 7th of October as the prosecutor had “perceived” no evidence against Mr. Moyo. It had been alleged the latter had approved of a Covid-19 US$60m contract for a then two-month-old United Arab Emirate company, without correct procedure and at an inflated price. US2m are alleged to have been paid to a bank account in Hungary.
A group of concerned citizens at once began to collect signatures for the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to appeal. It will be interesting to watch if they are successful.
Appeal and reopen the Zimbabwe “Drax” Covid Case w/ a Independant Special Prosecutor
South Africa’s fight against corruption limps along, as the Daily Maverick reports, with ongoing cases recorded alsounder President Cyril Ramaphoa. Thus the Covid-19 scandal concerning former Health Mnister Zweli Mkhize has busied South Africans minds and media since the 29th September. This too concerns a contract awarded without due process for some US$10m. Dr. Mkhize has denied any wrongdoing.
The tragedy is that in the case of Covid in particular such happenings affect and harm the population directly.
