The celebrations will begin at the Ruth Weiss Realschule Aschaffenburg, which will honour its namesake on the afternoon of 25 July from 2:00 p.m., followed by a school festival. On 26 July, Ruth's birthday, Ruth Weiss is expected at 10:30 a.m. for the ceremony of the city of Aschaffenburg in the Bachsaal. Ruth Weiss was born in 1924 into a German-Jewish family in Fürth, had to flee with her family from Nazi Germany to South Africa in the 1930s and fought all her life as a journalist and author against all forms of discrimination and racism, in southern Africa, in Europe and all over the world. In recognition of decades of diverse educational work in the fight against anti-Semitism and racism, she received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in April 2024. In Aschaffenburg, the Ruth-Weiss-Realschule bears her name.
Ruth’s large circle of friends gave rise to the Ruth Weiss Society. According to the association’s statutes, its goal and purpose is “the promotion of art and culture through the dissemination of the values of the author Ruth Weiss, in particular her efforts to create a society that is characterized by tolerance, humanity and the fight against racism.”
